What Happens When Your Connection Drops

A dropped connection does not wreck the match: the game lives on the server and you have time to come back. How long, what happens in each game and when a match counts as lost.

A dropped connection mid-game happens to everyone: a lift, the metro, switching from Wi-Fi to mobile data, or simply a closed tab. On tamashebi.cc it does not wreck the match on the spot. The game is not stored on your phone but on the server, so when you come back you continue from the same position — the same tiles, the same cards, the same score. But the time is not unlimited, and each game behaves a little differently. Below is exactly how long you have, what happens meanwhile, and when a match counts as lost.

Keeping the match

When your connection drops, the server notices and marks your seat as “waiting to return”. Your opponent sees on screen that you are coming back. As soon as your internet is back, the page tries to reconnect on its own — you see “Reconnecting…” while it does. Coming back is tied to your account, not to a particular connection, so it works from a brand-new connection too, for example after reloading the page.

When you return, everything is where it was: your hand, the board, the score, the Joker scoresheet, and in domino the last chat messages too. The move clock lives on the server as well: reloading the page does not give you fresh time, and your deadline carries on from where it was. That is deliberate — otherwise you could stall a move forever by closing and reopening the tab.

If you closed the game and ended up elsewhere on the site, a reminder about your active game appears at the top with a “Back to the game” button. A player can be in only one game at a time: until you finish your current match you cannot sit at a new table. The rule stops you from having clocks running against you in three games at once.

How long you have to come back

The return window is an administration setting and is 2 minutes by default. What happens during those two minutes depends on the game:

  • Domino: the game pauses and the move clock stops, so a dropped connection does not also cost you time. But the return window is one allowance for the whole match, and it is spent: if you drop out once for 90 seconds, next time you have only 30 seconds left.
  • Nardi and Japanese Joker: the window starts afresh with every drop, but the game does not pause. If it is your move and your clock runs out meanwhile, the server plays the move for you.
  • Classic Joker: the game carries on. If your move timer runs out, the server makes one move for you; if the return window runs out, a bot takes your seat. When you come back, you take your seat back.

Example

A domino match to 175, and you lead 120:95. You walk into the metro and vanish for 90 seconds: the game pauses and your opponent sees you are coming back. You return — everything is as it was, and your move clock picks up where it stopped. Half an hour later you drop out again: this time you have 30 seconds to return, not 2 minutes. If you are not back within 30 seconds, the match ends with your opponent winning, whatever the score.

When it counts as a loss

  • In domino, once the return window is used up, the match ends and your opponent wins. Such a match does not change anyone’s rating — neither yours nor theirs.
  • If both players drop out, the one who left first loses and the other wins. That way leaving last cannot be used to steal someone else’s win.
  • In nardi and Japanese Joker, running out the return window means losing the match. Leaving the table on purpose ends the match at once, with your opponent winning.
  • Before ending a match, the server checks whether you have really gone: if you are still at the table from another tab, you are simply marked as present.
  • In Classic Joker you cannot lose the match through a dropped connection: a bot plays your seat and the points are still yours. But if you leave the table on purpose, the bot keeps the seat to the end and you cannot return. At a coin table the stake is not refunded in that case.

When your opponent drops out

Now the other way round: your opponent drops out. In domino the game pauses and the screen shows that your opponent is coming back. You wait no longer than their remaining allowance; if they return, play carries on, and if not, you win the match. In nardi and Japanese Joker the game does not stop: when their move timer runs out the server plays for them, and if the return window also runs out, you win. In Classic Joker the table shows that a bot is playing that seat. Do not leave the table meanwhile: you would put yourself in the leaver’s position, and a match you were winning could turn into a loss.

Switching mobile networks

When you move from Wi-Fi to mobile data, your phone gets a new address and the old connection drops — that is normal. Because returning is tied to your account, a new connection usually comes back within a few seconds and the game continues from the same spot. On a phone the bigger risk is different: if you switch to another app, the phone may suspend the page left in the background. Answering a call or reading a message usually takes a few seconds, but a long conversation will eat your return window.

Sometimes the connection drops on our side — for example, the server restarts during a site update. Your match is not lost: its state is kept in separate storage, and the server picks the game up again as soon as it is back. In nardi and Japanese Joker, for the first 45 seconds after a restart an expired return clock does not end a match, so players have time to reconnect.

Tips for a stable game

  1. Before a long match, especially domino to 255 or 355, make sure your internet is stable.
  2. Avoid switching from Wi-Fi to mobile data mid-game — or do it between hands.
  3. Keep the tab open. If you close it by accident, open the site again and press “Back to the game”.
  4. A short call is fine, but remember that in nardi and Joker the clock keeps running.
  5. If you know you will have to go, it is better to finish the match or resign than to make your opponent wait two minutes.
  6. Check that battery-saver mode is not on — it cuts background connections sooner.
  7. If your connection drops often, play at casual tables rather than coin or ranked ones — that way a bad connection costs you nothing extra.

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to start over after a dropped connection?
No. The game is stored on the server. When you return, you continue from the same position with the same score.
How long do I have to come back?
2 minutes by default. In domino this is one allowance for the whole match and it is spent; in nardi and Japanese Joker it starts afresh with every drop.
Does a dropped connection cost me rating?
In domino, a match that ended because a player left does not change the rating. In Classic Joker a ranked match is played to the end — a bot plays your seat — and the result counts for you.
